A Kano State Sharia Court has ordered the remand of two vigilante operatives at a correctional facility following their arraignment for the alleged murder of a young man, Umar Muhammad Bachirawa. The tragedy, which stems from a disagreement over a dog, has drawn significant public attention within the area.

The defendants, identified as Mas’udu Abdullahi Bachirawa and Kabiru Adamu Bachirawa, were brought before the court by the police. Presiding judge Garba Hamza Malafa oversaw the initial court session.

How did the court proceedings unfold?

During the hearing, the prosecuting counsel, Barrister Awaisu Sani Lawan, formally requested the court to read the criminal charges to the accused individuals. The formal counts were subsequently presented to the defendants, both of whom entered a plea of not guilty to the allegations.

Following their plea, the prosecution counsel asked the court for an adjournment to allow time for official legal advice to be secured from the Office of the Attorney-General of the state.

In response to the application, the presiding judge adjourned the matter until December 16, 2026, to pave the way for the continuation of legal proceedings.
