Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU) in Katsina has bestowed a posthumous honorary Doctorate Degree in Political Science upon the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
The honorary degree was officially approved by the university's Governing Council and was presented during the institution's 14th convocation ceremony, which took place on Saturday in Katsina.
University officials stated that the accolade was given in recognition of Buhari's lifelong dedication to the political development of Nigeria, along with his visionary leadership and commitment to fostering national unity and progress.
Furthermore, they emphasized that Buhari's legacy, notably his substantial contributions to the advancement and reinforcement of Nigeria's higher education sector, warranted this posthumous honour.
The university's decision to honour the former president also aimed to reflect on his significant achievements in governance and nation-building, which they asserted should inspire current and future Nigerian leaders.
During the ceremony, former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Ahmad Rufa’i, spoke on behalf of the other awardees, motivating the graduates to pursue values such as patriotism, integrity, and selfless service to the nation.
Ambassador Rufa’i encouraged the graduates to utilize their education to build an inclusive society that upholds dignity, peace, and equal opportunities for all citizens.
In addition to the honorary degrees, the convocation witnessed the conferring of various degrees and diplomas to graduates from diverse faculties, alongside other honorary awards recognizing outstanding individuals for their exceptional contributions to the nation's development.
