Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has given his assent to the automatic appointment of 416 nurses and midwives graduating from the Shehu Sule College of Nursing Sciences in Damaturu.
The newly qualified professionals include 158 community nurses, 196 basic nurses and midwives, and 62 individuals who obtained a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Nursing from the institution.
Governor Buni announced this decision during a graduation ceremony for student nurses and midwives held on Tuesday in Damaturu. He was represented at the event by his Deputy, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana.
Buni explained that the state government's decision to immediately employ these graduates is intended to address the shortage of personnel and improve the quality of healthcare services available in health facilities throughout Yobe.
He highlighted that the state's significant investment in the college over the last seven years has yielded positive and impactful results for the residents.
Furthermore, he noted that in recent years, the Yobe State government has recruited over 3,500 healthcare professionals, with many of them being alumni of the college, to ensure adequate and skilled manpower in its health institutions.
In her remarks, the Provost of the college, Hajiya Hadiza Sabo, revealed that from 2019 to 2026, the college has successfully graduated 1,485 students. She added that all these graduates have been automatically absorbed into the state's healthcare workforce upon completing their training.
She emphasized that the policy of automatic employment has played a crucial role in streamlining the recruitment, deployment, and retention of healthcare staff within Yobe State.
