The son of the Oniwo of Afin, Oba Simeon Olanipekun, from the Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, has been released by his abductors following the payment of a N20 million ransom.
The victim, identified as Olaolu, who is currently serving as a National Youth Service Corps member, was taken captive along with his father on December 31, 2025.
A source close to the family, speaking anonymously to Punch on Tuesday, January 20, confirmed that the prince was freed on Monday after extensive negotiations with the perpetrators.
"The prince was indeed released on Monday morning after we paid N20 million. He was dropped off at a herders' settlement near Oreke in the Ifelodun Local Government Area, from where he was taken to a military base in Oreke, and they subsequently contacted us," the source stated.
Olaolu is currently receiving medical care at a private hospital due to the physical and psychological distress experienced during his period of captivity.
Despite the release of the son, the monarch, Oba Simeon Olanipekun, and other abducted residents are still being held. The kidnappers have reportedly escalated their demands, requesting an additional N15 million for the king's release.
