The Kwara State Ministry of Health has confirmed that there are currently no active cases of Lassa fever within the state. This affirmation follows the death of a 14-year-old boy who tested positive for the virus after his demise.

Dr. Amina El-Imam, the state’s Commissioner for Health, elaborated that the adolescent, who resided in Ogun State, was transported to Kwara for medical attention. He was treated by health officials but unfortunately succumbed after a few days. Subsequent laboratory tests conducted post-mortem confirmed that he had Lassa fever.

El-Imam reassured the public that there is no active transmission of Lassa fever in Kwara State and urged citizens not to panic. However, she encouraged people to stay vigilant and uphold proper hygiene practices to avert the spread of the virus. She emphasized the need for maintaining cleanliness in homes and environments to minimize rodent infestations, which are a principal factor in the transmission of Lassa fever.

The commissioner also advised individuals showing symptoms such as fever, sore throat, headaches, or general weakness to visit the nearest health facility without delay for medical evaluation.
