The Lagos State Police Command, alongside the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) of Lagos State, is currently addressing serious allegations made by Mirabel, a TikToker and aesthetic vendor, claiming she was raped in her Lagos apartment by an unknown assailant.
In a video shared on her TikTok account on Monday, Mirabel detailed that the alleged assault took place on Sunday when she had consumed alcohol to help her sleep, as she has been struggling with insomnia.
She explained in the video that she ingested a sniper (a pesticide) due to her inability to cope with the emotional fallout from the assault. "I was raped yesterday, February 15th, in my own apartment, in the morning. I have insomnia. If I’m not drunk or high, I can’t sleep. I had been drinking, but I still couldn’t fall asleep despite feeling tired," she recounted.
Mirabel stated she drifted off around 6 a.m., but three hours later, she was awakened by knocking at her door, which she initially assumed was from a neighbor, as it was a Sunday morning. After answering the door under the influence of alcohol, she was pushed back into her apartment, hit her head, and lost consciousness.
Upon regaining awareness, she found a man on top of her, with cloth lodged in her mouth and tied up. In her narration, she expressed fear and mentioned that she hoped for a neighbor to hear her cries for help, but found no one available, as many residents were likely at church.
"I waited for what felt like over 20 minutes, during which I struggled silently," she said. “I didn’t recognize my aggressor. I just remained there. Eventually, I noticed I was bleeding and thought it was my menstrual period, but then I discovered it was due to the perpetrator's actions. He cut me to inflict harm."
She claimed that the man sent her a threatening text message after the incident, where he identified as 'Priston.' In the message, the sender alleged that he assaulted her because she had rejected his advances and refused to share her phone number. He also made troubling statements about his status, claiming that his wealthy father could potentially influence the legal outcome should the case reach court.
The horrifying message contained details revealing Priston's intent to later establish a relationship with Mirabel in the future and expressed no remorse for his actions.
The shocking video and subsequent revelations have led to widespread condemnation online, sparking calls for stricter actions against sexual violence and immediate involvement from law enforcement.
Spokesperson for the Lagos police, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the ongoing investigation, saying it has been forwarded to the Gender Unit for thorough examination. Adebisi reached out to Mirabel through TikTok and expressed hope for her cooperation in providing further details.
The DSVA has also issued a press release acknowledging the growing public concern over the case. They reiterated their commitment to assisting survivors of sexual violence and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward. They reminded the public of the state's zero tolerance for sexual violence and the importance of ensuring survivors feel secure in reporting incidents.
On a positive note, in a follow-up video posted on her TikTok on Tuesday, Mirabel shared that she had been rescued by friends who took her to the hospital, expressing gratitude for the support received amidst her struggles with suicidal thoughts following the traumatic event. She apologized to her supporters for her previous distressing actions and confirmed her intent to start engaging with messages as she gradually recovers.
