Lagos Police Detain Officers Over Allegations of Harassment During Stop-and-Search

The Lagos State Police Command has placed some of its officers under detention following accusations of misconduct, including harassment and extortion targeting young people within the state.

The action follows the emergence of a video circulating widely on social media, which depicts several police officers from the command attempting to seize the mobile phones of young men they had stopped during a routine search exercise.

The footage clearly shows one of the young men attempting to retrieve his phone from an officer involved in the stop.

In an official statement, the command confirmed that the apprehension of these officers was a direct result of complaints and the presentation of evidence substantiating their alleged unprofessional conduct.

The statement further indicated that the officers in question are currently undergoing an internal disciplinary process, known as an orderly room trial, while the investigation into the matter continues.
