The Lagos State Government has revealed a comprehensive maintenance program for the Mazamaza Bridge along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, which will last for 18 weeks. This initiative precedes plans to demolish and reconstruct the bridge as part of the Blue Line Rail Phase 2 expansion from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko.

In a statement from the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, it was confirmed that work will commence on Monday, January 19, 2026, affecting both the Toll and Service Lanes in each direction, with a focus on repairing expansion joints and various structural components.

Osiyemi emphasized that the bridge will remain partially open during the maintenance, with traffic being redirected through diversions on the Toll, BRT, and Service Lanes to mitigate delays.

"The Lagos State Government has provided a traffic diversion plan for the maintenance efforts on both the Service Lane and Toll Lane of the Mazamaza Bridge along the Lagos–Badagry Carriageway, which will run from January 19 to May 28, 2026," the statement details.

The maintenance schedule includes a preliminary phase from January 24 to January 30, set to establish work zones and evaluate traffic patterns. Phases 1 to 4 will take place from January 31 to March 30, targeting repairs on the inbound Badagry lanes. Subsequently, Phases 5 to 8 will occur from March 31 to June 2, emphasizing repairs on the inbound Lagos lanes.

Motorists should anticipate lane closures throughout the entire 18-week duration, ending on May 28, 2026.

Temporary traffic measures have also been laid out. During the initial phases impacting the Badagry-bound lanes, the BRT Corridor will be utilized, while the Toll Lane will be redirected as maintenance progresses. Service Lane works will restrict traffic to a single lane prior to full restoration. A similar diversion strategy will be employed for the Lagos-bound lanes, alternating between the BRT and Toll Lanes, and final Service Lane works will also reduce traffic to one lane until completion.

Drivers are urged to adhere to traffic signals and follow guidance from officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority to ensure safety and maintain traffic flow during the maintenance period.

In December 2024, Olasunkanmi Okusaga, the Director of Rail Transport at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, indicated that structural evaluations revealed that the bridge did not possess adequate strength for rail operations, which necessitated its rebuilding. He also stated that the new Mazamaza Bridge would be constructed to meet international standards, supported by 66 piers, and designed for a lifespan of at least 75 years.
