The Kaduna State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has voiced allegations of persecution against former governor Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai and other opposition figures within the state.

At a press briefing held in Kaduna on Tuesday, the party indicated that recent events suggest a curtailment of democratic freedoms and potential misuse of state institutions.

The accusations coincide with an ongoing dispute between the ADC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), stemming from a division within the party at the national level.

Some party members have expressed dissatisfaction with INEC, stating that the commission has not acknowledged what they consider to be the legitimate leadership of the party.

The party cited Mr. El-Rufai's non-appointment as a minister, an investigation by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, and the detention of several associates, including Bashir Saidu, Ja’afar Ibrahim Sani, Jimi Lawal, and Aisha Galadima, as evidence of a coordinated effort to diminish his political standing.

The ADC also raised questions about the involvement of Governor Uba Sani and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, suggesting their potential influence on the current situation.

Furthermore, the party alleged that law enforcement and anti-corruption bodies, such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), and the State Security Service (SSS), are perceived to be applying laws selectively.

While acknowledging the mandates of these agencies, the ADC cautioned that their involvement in politically charged cases could erode public confidence.

Concerns were also highlighted regarding the extended detention periods, alleged mistreatment, and alterations to bail conditions affecting Mr. El- Rufai.

Beyond Mr. El-Rufai, the ADC claimed a wider crackdown on opposition figures across Kaduna State, noting instances of arrests and intimidation in various local government areas.

The party also pointed to alleged interference in internal party matters, including the promotion of factions and parallel leadership structures, alongside reported conflicts involving the party's national leadership.

Additionally, the ADC accused regulatory bodies of obstructing the establishment of its party offices within the state.

The ADC stated that these events are occurring at a time when Nigerians are grappling with significant socio-economic challenges, including insecurity, high unemployment, and economic hardship.

The party warned that escalating political tensions could exacerbate existing societal problems and divert attention from crucial governance issues.

The party has formally requested a cessation of what it described as harassment and politically motivated prosecutions, urging authorities to uphold due process and the rule of law.

It also called for the release of individuals allegedly held unlawfully and demanded that institutions operate with impartiality and independence.

The ADC emphasized the necessity of a robust opposition for the health of democracy and cautioned that attempts to suppress dissent could destabilize democratic processes.

The party urged relevant governmental bodies, civil society organizations, and the international community to closely observe the unfolding situation and protect democratic principles in Kaduna State and Nigeria as a whole.
