The Lagos State Government has provided a total of N40 million to the families and dependents of LASTMA officers who perished while fulfilling their duties.
The funds were presented by Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, at an event held at LASTMA's headquarters in Oshodi on Wednesday.
Each of the twenty families received N2 million as support in recognition of their loss.
In his remarks, Mr. Giwa emphasized that this financial assistance should not be interpreted as compensation, noting that nothing can truly replace a human life.
He described the distribution as a meaningful acknowledgment of the bravery, commitment, and ultimate sacrifice of the officers in service to the state and its citizens.
“The Lagos State Government is dedicated to honoring the memory of these brave individuals. Their sacrifices have not gone unnoticed, and their families will not be left to face this loss alone,” Mr. Giwa stated.
Olawale Musa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, mentioned that such initiatives will enhance public confidence in government institutions and reassure current officers of the recognition of their sacrifices.
Meanwhile, LASTMA's General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, referred to the deceased officers as patriots whose dedicated service and discipline are integral to the agency’s legacy.
The widow of LASTMA’s first General Manager, Adebayo Adegboayega Coker, advised the beneficiaries to utilize the funds wisely, particularly for the education and well-being of their children.
The widow of the late Adeyemo Rotimi expressed gratitude on behalf of all families, appreciating the government’s gesture that pays tribute to their loved ones’ memories and sacrifices.
As a background, LASTMA was founded in July 2000 to manage traffic, enforce road safety, and minimize accidents across Lagos. The officers routinely encounter significant hazards, including aggressive drivers and challenging traffic conditions, making their roles both demanding and perilous.
In line with this initiative, the Lagos State Government continues to strive to honor the contributions of public servants while offering essential assistance to their bereaved families.
