The Lagos State Government has disclosed a traffic management strategy ahead of the initiation of Phase I reconstruction and expansion of Ogunnusi Road located in the Ikeja Local Government Area.
In a statement released on Sunday via X, the state's Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, mentioned that the strategy is designed to facilitate the Federal Ministry of Works' activities, which are slated to commence on March 6.
Mr. Osiyemi indicated that the project will cover the route stretching from Ojodu-Berger Bus Stop to the Mobil Filling Station Junction, heading toward Ijaye/Agege, and is part of a comprehensive scheme aimed at enhancing the 9.0-kilometre dual carriageway that connects these points both inbound and outbound.
He elaborated that the full undertaking, which includes Phases I and II, is projected to extend from March 6, 2026, to January 6, 2028.
"Phase I of the project is to focus on a 4.5-kilometre stretch from Ojodu- Berger Bus Stop to the Mobil Filling Station Junction (Ijaye/Agege Bound). This phase is expected to begin on Friday, March 6, 2026, and conclude by Saturday, February 6, 2027," he stated.
Traffic Diversion
Osiyemi noted that during the first phase, no vehicles will be permitted within the construction zone.
Motorists traveling towards Ijaye/Agege via Ogunnusi Road from Ojodu-Berger are to utilize a contraflow set up on the Ojodu-Berger-bound carriageway for approximately one kilometre before merging back onto the main roadway.
Alternatively, he explained, drivers can take Dr. Nurudeen Olowopopo Way to reach Otunba Jobifele Way, linking to Obafemi Awolowo Way before accessing Lateef Jakande Road to continue to their destinations.
Additionally, large vehicles and truck drivers coming from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway towards Agege are advised to reroute through Ojota/Maryland, take Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, connect Oba Akran Avenue to the Guinness Roundabout, and proceed via Ogba Road to Pen Cinema.
For those traveling from Ijaye/Agege towards Ojodu-Berger, although they will encounter ongoing traffic, they will be directed into a contraflow for about one kilometre near the construction area before regaining full access post- construction.
The commissioner assured that emergency tow trucks will be strategically positioned along the corridor to provide quick assistance for breakdowns and incidents throughout the construction phase.
He urged motorists to remain patient, adhere to traffic signage, and work with traffic management personnel on-site, emphasizing that these temporary measures are critical for the safe and effective completion of the project.
Key Links
Ogunnusi Road serves as a vital arterial route linking Ojodu-Berger to Agege and surrounding communities in Ikeja, acting as an alternative to the heavily trafficked Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
This route connects important residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, particularly in Agege and Ojodu-Berger, and is frequently congested, especially during peak hours.
As with several major roads throughout the state, this corridor is under federal oversight, with the Federal Ministry of Works charged with structural repairs while the Lagos State Government typically coordinates traffic diversions and monitoring during construction efforts.
In recent months, the government has adopted a phased approach to infrastructure projects alongside proactive traffic advisory strategies to minimize disruption within the commercial hub.
