The Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) has chosen Chief Dr Ogwu Onoja as the Patron and Ambassador for the All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) 2026. This decision aims to enhance preparations for the continental women's golf championship set to take place in Nigeria.
According to the association, this appointment reflects its commitment to hosting a successful and internationally acclaimed tournament while fostering the advancement of women’s golf throughout the continent.
Dr. Onoja, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and the Agenyi-Attah of the Igala Kingdom, was also honored with a plaque by LGAN, acknowledging his significant contributions to sports development and unwavering support for women's golf both in Nigeria and Africa.
While presenting the appointment letter in Abuja, LGAN President Lami Ahmed highlighted that Onoja’s selection was based on his leadership experience, influence, and notable passion for sports growth. Ahmed described him as a distinguished individual whose participation would significantly enhance the championship and boost confidence among stakeholders.
Ahmed announced that the 2026 edition of the All Africa Challenge Trophy is scheduled to occur from November 1 to November 7 at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja. She mentioned that the tournament is expected to draw participation from female golfers across more than 40 African nations.
Ahmed also noted that Nigeria had previously hosted the championship in 1996 and 2010, emphasizing that the 2026 edition will further showcase the country’s organizational capabilities and expanding influence in African sports.
As Patron and Ambassador, Onoja will be tasked with providing strategic insights, promoting the values of the championship, and rallying national support aligned with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope sports initiative.
In his remarks, Onoja affirmed that sports serve as a vital catalyst for unity and social cohesion, capable of transcending ethnic, cultural, and political boundaries. He stressed the importance of increased investment in women’s sports, pointing out that female athletes competing on the continental stage embody excellence, resilience, and national pride.
He applauded LGAN for its dedication to promoting women’s golf and pledged his unwavering support to ensure the success of the 2026 championship. According to him, hosting the event would allow Nigeria to demonstrate its organizational prowess and celebrated hospitality.
