In a closely fought encounter, the Lionesses of Cameroon clinched a dramatic 1-0 victory against Nigeria's Super Falcons during a friendly match in Yaoundé.
The match, the first of two face-offs between these African female football powerhouses, was decided by a superb strike from Mbomezomo Yvana late in the game.
Head coach Justine Madugu initiated the game with Comfort Erhabor in goal and Monday Gift leading the attack as the ten-time WAFCON champions geared up to defend their title.
Cameroon's initial opportunity arose when they capitalized on a defensive lapse by Nigeria, leading to a shot that Erhabor saved brilliantly from close range to keep the score at bay.
Gradually, the Super Falcons regained their composure, controlling much of the game and creating several chances to score. However, a combination of inadequate decision-making and lack of sharpness resulted in missed opportunities, with many chances going off target.
The reigning WAFCON champions were dealt a blow in added time when Yvana scored with a cutback that found the net, securing a narrow victory for Cameroon.
This match marks the first loss for the Super Falcons since June 2025, though they have a chance to seek vengeance when they meet again next Tuesday.
