Maduka Okoye, the goalkeeper for the Super Eagles, has elaborated on his decision to refuse an invitation to participate in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 26-year-old was notably absent from the Super Eagles' roster for the tournament set to take place in Morocco.
Okoye missed the beginning of the 2025/26 season due to a ban associated with an alleged betting scandal.
He stated that he opted not to join the tournament in order to concentrate on regaining full fitness after a prolonged period away from competitive matches.
Additionally, he emphasized the importance of showing gratitude to Udinese for their support during a challenging time in his career.
"Considering I was not Nigeria’s primary goalkeeper, I thought it was prudent to stay at Udinese, refine my skills, and express my gratitude to the club for their backing," he conveyed to German media outlet Kicker.
Okoye has now been selected for Nigeria's upcoming international friendlies against Iran and Jordan.
