Authorities have taken a 62-year-old man into custody on suspicion of fatally stabbing his estranged wife at their mutual residence during Valentine’s Day celebrations.
Reportedly, Stephen Demaro is accused of attacking Debora, 59, at their home located in San Juan Capistrano, Orange County, during the early hours of February 14.
Law enforcement officials responded to a report of a disturbance at the couple's ranch-style property on Laurelwood Lane shortly after 6:30 AM, as noted by Sgt. Lizbeth Gwisdalla.
Upon entering the Demaros’ home, officers discovered Stephen with injuries to his arms, according to the sergeant.
Further investigations led police to the garage, where they found Debora's lifeless body, which showed signs of fatal stab wounds. Stephen was subsequently transported to a hospital for his injuries.
Property documents indicate that the Demaros had resided in their modest $800,000 house on a tranquil Orange County street for the past 26 years.
While Gwisdalla did not disclose any details regarding a potential motive for the alleged crime, she confirmed that although they lived together, the couple was estranged.
Stephen is currently being held at the Orange County Intake Release Center in Santa Ana, with bail set at $1 million.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, February 18.
