The Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) has commissioned a new integrated Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refuelling facility located at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife. This development is highlighted as another achievement in the fund's mission to stimulate investments across Nigeria’s gas sector and expand the use of domestic gas resources.

During the inauguration ceremony, the Executive Director of MDGIF, Mr. Oluwole Adama, characterized the project as a tangible representation of Nigeria's ongoing energy transition. He stated that the initiative signifies progress, collaborative efforts, and a commitment to advancing Nigeria’s energy transition, advocating for cleaner fuel alternatives, and increasing domestic gas consumption in alignment with national energy goals.

Adama elaborated on MDGIF's role, explaining that the fund was established to encourage investments in midstream and downstream gas infrastructure throughout the country by entering into equity partnerships with private sector investors. He emphasized the fund’s clear objective: to support projects that develop gas value chains, improve gas accessibility, enhance environmental quality, and generate substantial socio-economic benefits for Nigerians.

He further noted that the CNG refuelling infrastructure at Obafemi Awolowo University is a prime example of such a strategic investment. Adama proudly announced that through its equity partnership with FEMADEC Energy Limited, MDGIF is supporting the establishment of 20 CNG refuelling stations across 20 federal universities nationwide.

Professor Adebayo Bamire, the Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, praised the initiative, noting that the facility, which is intended to serve both the university community and the surrounding area, is expected to create avenues for research, hands-on learning, and innovation in the field of alternative fuels. He also highlighted that the project will strengthen the bond between the university and its host community, promote sustainable transportation, and foster shared economic value.

In a similar vein, Mr. Akinnola Fola, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FEMADEC Group, reiterated the company's dedication to building safe, efficient, and scalable CNG infrastructure across Nigeria, achieved through robust collaboration between public and private sectors.

Fola explained that the OAU CNG project is designed to reduce transportation expenses and lower pollution levels on campus. He added that it will offer CNG bus and vehicle conversion services for students, staff, and the nearby community, while also supporting practical research and innovation in gas- powered transportation.

The statement also mentioned that as part of the push for clean transport within the institution, the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, provided 50 CNG-powered buses. Additionally, PiCNG donated 10 CNG-powered tricycles to facilitate more affordable mobility for students and staff, thereby encouraging the adoption of cleaner energy sources.
