Meta is preparing to launch trials for premium subscription tiers across its popular platforms: Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. This initiative represents the technology giant's latest move towards developing revenue streams from paid digital services.

The company has stated that these new subscriptions will grant users access to supplementary features, including advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. Importantly, the fundamental services offered by these platforms will continue to be available to everyone free of charge. The initial testing phases are anticipated to commence in the upcoming months.

Among the potential paid offerings are sophisticated AI functionalities and access to newer products, such as Meta’s Vibes application, which allows for the creation of visual content through AI. Vibes was initially unveiled in September as part of the Meta AI app.

Reports indicate that Meta is also planning to integrate technology from Manus, an AI firm founded in China that Meta reportedly acquired in December for approximately $2 billion (£1.46 billion). This acquisition is expected to bolster Meta's AI ecosystem across both its consumer-facing and enterprise solutions. Meta will continue to offer Manus subscriptions separately to its business clientele.

Manus specialises in developing AI "agents" capable of independently executing complex tasks, such as travel arrangements or presentation creation, with minimal user intervention. This autonomous capability differentiates Manus from conventional chatbots that require multiple prompts.

In January, Chinese authorities announced they would review Meta's acquisition of Manus, examining whether the deal violated technology export regulations or national security protocols.

This move towards subscription services follows a pattern of recent monetisation experiments by Meta. Last year, the company tested limitations on link sharing for some users, gauging whether increased sharing capabilities would add value for paying subscribers.

Furthermore, in 2023, Meta introduced paid verification services for Facebook and Instagram, providing users with a blue checkmark badge for a monthly fee.
