Mikel Obi, a renowned former Nigerian international, has offered his perspective on the dismissal of Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior, suggesting that the coach struggled to connect with the club's fundamental identity.
Rosenior was let go on Wednesday following a significant 3-0 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion, a result that severely impacted Chelsea's aspirations for a Champions League qualification berth.
Speaking on his "Obi One Podcast," the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations champion stated that Rosenior's management style seemed inauthentic. Obi posited that the manager's inclination towards overly intellectual communication might have hindered his ability to resonate with the players, thereby contributing to a lack of on-field synergy.
"From the very first minute I listened to him in a press conference, I felt there was something about him that didn't click," Mikel Obi commented.
"Success in coaching requires players to believe in your philosophy. That only happens when you are authentic. You have to send the right message without sugarcoating things or trying to sound overly intellectual. You need to be natural, relaxed, and yourself. When you try to be something you’re not, it just doesn't work."
Obi concluded by observing that the disconnect between the manager and the institution was palpable to many observers. "I never saw that connection with the football club. It didn’t sit well with me or a lot of other people. Many simply didn't see it working out in the long run."
