The Headquarters Theatre Command of Operation Hadin Kai has begun investigating accusations that troops shot and killed a civilian named Abdulrahman Mustapha, also referred to as Abchin, in Maiduguri.

This incident reportedly took place on March 22, 2026, near the Polo area close to the Federal High Court, generating significant outrage on social media, particularly with claims that the individual was unarmed and returning from a Sallah visit.

Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North-East, highlighted the severity of the allegations and confirmed that an investigation is underway to uncover the truth.

He remarked that the allegations include claims of extrajudicial killing, infringement of constitutional rights, lack of transparency, and inadequate handling of the deceased's remains.

The Theatre Command stated, however, that initial operational findings suggest the case may have security implications. The incident was reported to have occurred around 11:40 p.m., with initial reports indicating troops might have encountered individuals suspected of being part of a Boko Haram or ISWAP reconnaissance team or a sleeper cell operating in that vicinity.

There are further claims that the deceased attempted to take a soldier’s firearm, which is viewed as a direct threat to military personnel.

The statement revealed that the individual was discovered with multiple identification cards reflecting various names, including a foreign ID from Niger, which indicates a potential for cross-border movements or the use of a false identity.

Additionally, he was reportedly in possession of a bottle of Tutolin syrup and substances thought to be cannabis.

The military noted that the deceased was accompanied by two unidentified women who fled, raising concerns about possible criminal connections yet to be accounted for.

Witnesses also suggested that the behavior of the deceased prior to the incident was suspicious, which led to a distress call to nearby troops.

The military stressed that these findings are preliminary and still need verification, and ongoing efforts aim to locate the fleeing individuals who may shed more light on the situation.

The Theatre Command has committed to ensuring that the investigation will be thorough, fair, and compliant with established military procedures and Rules of Engagement.

It also reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and safeguarding human rights.
