The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has directed the immediate apprehension of the proprietor of a multi-story hotel that unfortunately collapsed in Jikwoyi, Abuja, on Friday, April 4th. Furthermore, the Minister declared that the site will be repurposed for public utility.
This incident occurred while construction workers were present on the site, prompting an immediate response from emergency services and relevant authorities.
During an on-site visit on Sunday, April 7th, Minister Wike stated that the building was erected without the necessary approvals from the FCT Department of Development Control. He highlighted that multiple stop-work notices previously issued to the developers were disregarded.
Wike confirmed that although no lives were lost in the collapse, several individuals sustained injuries and required hospital treatment. He emphasized that the situation could have led to a much graver outcome.
Announcing the administration's intention for the land, Wike stated that the FCT Administration would reclaim the property for public utilization. He assured that those responsible for the unauthorized construction would face legal prosecution.
The Minister also mentioned that consultations would be held with the local community to decide on an appropriate public project for the reclaimed land.
