Gunmen believed to be herdsmen have fatally shot a 29-year-old student in his third year at the Federal University of Education, Pankshin. The incident took place in Dum Village, Bachi District, within the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday night, April 6, 2026.
The victim, identified as Badung Sunday, was the sole male child of his mother. His life was cut short when he and another resident, Dachomo Habila, encountered the assailants.
Rwang Tengwong, who serves as the National Publicity Secretary for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), confirmed the attack in a statement issued on April 7th. Tengwong also noted that Dachomo Habila sustained injuries during the onslaught.
The BYM, led by its National President Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, issued a strong condemnation of the "premeditated attack" carried out by what they described as "armed Fulani terrorists" in Dum Village. The association stated that the terrorists had positioned themselves to attack the village and lay in wait at its entrance.
During the ambush, Badung Sunday was shot and killed, while Dachomo Habila managed to escape despite attempts on his life.
The Berom Youth Moulders-Association characterized the event as a "calculated and barbaric assault" on defenseless individuals. They emphasized that it highlights a pattern of deliberate targeting of peaceful Berom communities across Riyom, Barkin Ladi, and Jos South Local Government Areas.
BYM has formally requested an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the attack. The association is urging security agencies to diligently pursue the individuals responsible, including their financiers, and ensure they face justice.
The group stressed that the residents of Plateau State should not be subjected to continuous threats and attacks.
Furthermore, the Association appealed to security operatives to enhance surveillance and protective measures around vulnerable communities that have been recurrently targeted.
BYM conveyed its profound sympathies to the family of the deceased, Badung Sunday, and to the residents of Dum Village and the entire Bachi District for their grievous loss.
While observing this tragedy, the Association also expressed gratitude to God for Dachomo Habila's survival and offered prayers for solace and fortitude to the grieving family.
The Berom Youth Moulders-Association reiterated that the ongoing killings of innocent people require decisive action and cannot be met with silence or indifference. They called for the identification, apprehension, and prosecution of those involved in accordance with Nigerian law.
