Inhabitants of Kabanyo/Kanyagwal Ward, within Nyangande Market, Kisumu County, Kenya, have reportedly taken the law into their own hands, resulting in the death of a suspected criminal. The incident occurred after the mob stormed a hospital to seize the individual, who had been admitted for medical attention following an earlier severe beating by residents.
Reports indicate that the suspect was initially apprehended by community members who accused him of engaging in criminal acts within the locality. Following the capture, he was subjected to a brutal assault. Police intervention led to his rescue and subsequent transfer to a hospital for necessary medical care.
However, the agitated crowd later converged and tracked the suspect to the medical facility. According to eyewitness accounts, the mob managed to overpower the police officers on guard. They proceeded to enter the hospital ward where the suspect was being treated.
Witnesses described the scene as the crowd allegedly ordered medical personnel to stand aside. They confronted the suspect, reportedly demanding an explanation for his alleged continued criminal behaviour despite receiving treatment.
When the suspect did not provide a satisfactory response, the mob disconnected his medical drips and removed his bandages. They then forcibly removed him from the hospital and resumed their assault, leading to his death at the scene.
Following the fatal attack, the group reportedly returned the body to the hospital. Authorities have since placed the body in the morgue and initiated an investigation into the violent incident and the circumstances that allowed the mob to breach the hospital premises.
