A teacher has reportedly been fatally stabbed by a teenage student believed to have harboured resentment towards her. Olesya Baguta, aged 55, was attacked on Monday morning, April 6, as she arrived at School No. 5 in Dobryanka, Russia. Reports indicate that the alleged assailant, identified as Matvey, 17, was lying in wait near the school entrance before carrying out the assault.
Baguta, who also served as the school's vice-principal, was a well-regarded educator and was recognised as Teacher of the Year in 2018. Despite immediate efforts to save her life, including transport to a hospital via air ambulance, she tragically passed away from her stab wounds.
Perm governor Dmitry Makhonin expressed his condolences, stating, "Unfortunately, despite all the doctors’ efforts, it was not possible to save her." The teenage suspect has been taken into police custody.
It has been revealed that the student was already on a police watch list and had previously been held back a school year due to behavioural issues. Sources suggest that while the attacker had made threats of violence in the past, these were "not taken seriously." Authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the killing, with some unconfirmed reports suggesting a personal grievance against the teacher was the cause.
