Numerous Nigerian internet stars, including skit creators and comedians, have made successful transitions into Nollywood, utilizing their online recognition to secure film roles in both movies and series. This phenomenon has gained momentum in recent years, merging digital humor with mainstream cinema.

Filmmakers have continually tapped into the allure of internet celebrities, leading the industry towards a potential oversaturation where popularity may surpass acting skill.

Ogene, known for his humorous life advice in brief comedic skits, prominently features in the YouTube film A Hand to Hold, effectively bringing his online character into a movie setting.

The narrative of A Hand to Hold revolves around Maria, played by Mercy Johnson Okojie, who is a hardworking and compassionate woman running a food establishment. Despite her efforts, individuals in her community often exploit her goodwill, including her neighbors and patrons. Among her benefactors is Oghenetega, interpreted by Ojiagho Ogene (popular as Geh Geh), who perpetually lands himself in difficulties.

In addition to Oghenetega's antics, Maria's boyfriend Gabriel, portrayed as a struggling musician, also exploits her by spending her money to support his reckless lifestyle. Although Oghenetega’s troublesome behavior is evident, he offers valuable advice to others which helps them in their endeavors.

Gabriel's challenging relationship with one of his girlfriends, Salome, leads to a scheme in which he fabricates a land sale story to fund a move to Canada. However, he ultimately deceives Maria, promising marriage, and ends up losing money to Salome, leaving him devastated as he realizes his betrayal against Maria, who has financially supported him.

A Hand to Hold does not aim to reinvent storytelling in contemporary Nigerian cinema but rather seeks to deliver a light-hearted drama grounded in conventional Nollywood themes such as betrayal, moral lessons, and resilience.

Ghe Ghe in movie A Hand to Hold

The strength of this film lies in its accessibility, employing a straightforward narrative and comedic aspects that resonate with viewers familiar with the rapid storytelling style prevalent on digital platforms. Ogene's performance largely reflects his established online persona, focusing on humor through unsolicited counsel and drawing upon familiar comedic traits. Mercy Johnson Okojie renders emotional truthfulness to her role, embodying the faithful yet enduring protagonist archetype she has adeptly portrayed in various productions.

As a depiction of a rising trend in Nigeria's digital film artistry, A Hand to Hold embodies low-budget productions driven by social media influences. Its success in creating enduring cinematic mastery remains uncertain, yet it continues to bridge the gap between viral online fame and traditional Nollywood storytelling.

However, the film's concept also stands as its primary weakness, lacking a robust foundation for a captivating storyline. While initial interest may be generated through the popularity of digital personalities, keeping the audience engaged through a full-length narrative demands more intricate plots and character development.

Much of A Hand to Hold’s script appears tailored to fit Ogene’s comedic style rather than to derive from substantial storytelling. His presence, characterized by humorous phrases and moral guidance, renders the role less impactful and stifles character growth.

Consequently, the film bears semblance to an elongated skit rather than a cohesive narrative, with dialogue and scenarios often constructed around Ogene’s moral advisories, occasionally detracting from the emotional depth or narrative tension.

The uneven development of supporting characters further complicates the viewing experience. Although Mercy Johnson Okojie's portrayal of Maria is strong, the film fails to delve deeply into the emotional ramifications of her persistent exploitation, instead presenting her kindness as unwavering and overly symbolic.

Ghe Ghe as Ogehnetega

Similarly predictable is Gabriel's character transformation, moving from a struggling musician to a manipulative partner without sufficient depth, limiting what could have been a nuanced arc to a mere cautionary tale.

Moreover, the encroaching influence of internet fame can overshadow the foundational aspects of filmmaking, such as solid screenwriting and character depth, posing challenges for Nollywood. As the race for digital attention accelerates, storytelling quality may suffer.

Thus, while A Hand to Hold serves as a light-hearted, easily digestible drama for a YouTube audience, it struggles to rise above the restrictions set by its concept. Its dependency on internet celebrity culture, without strong narrative principles, ultimately hinders its potential for creating a memorable and impactful Nollywood production.

Final Verdict: 6/10

A Hand to Hold is currently available on the Mercy Johnson YouTube channel.
