Many passengers suffered varying injuries on Thursday morning when a Sharon bus collided with an 18-seater bus that belonged to the University of Jos.
The incident took place at the Kwanan Randa sharp bend in Jibam, located within the Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Community sources revealed to our correspondent that the university bus bore the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA) emblem.
Witness Dimka Nenrit narrated that the 18-seater bus was en route to a burial ceremony in Dabat within the Qua’anpan Local Government Area when the accident transpired.
He described the incident as catastrophic, noting that nearly all passengers in both vehicles incurred injuries of differing severities.
The injured were swiftly transported to a medical facility for urgent treatment.
"We are thankful to God that no fatalities were reported during the rescue. The site of the accident turned chaotic and emotional as bystanders, community volunteers, and emergency workers worked tirelessly to free trapped individuals and remove debris blocking the roadway,” he stated.
"The crash caused a significant traffic jam on the busy road, leaving drivers and passengers stuck for several hours until volunteers and security personnel managed to clear the road and restore traffic flow,” he added.
Peter Longsan, the Public Education Officer for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the incident.
He stated, “Regarding the accident on Shendam road, it occurred in an area where our personnel are not stationed as it is quite far from Mangu and Shendam. However, we have confirmed the occurrence through local residents and have dispatched officers to gather further details.”
Longsan continued, “I have tried reaching the Public Relations Officer of the University of Jos. Given that the vehicle bears the NUGA marking, it is likely owned by the university. We are also aware that some victims have been taken to the Jos University Teaching Hospital for treatment.”
