Edo State is gearing up for the 2nd edition of the Niger Delta Games, with the completion of vital upgrades to the sports facilities designated for the event.
In a move reminiscent of the preparations made in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State before the inaugural event, the organizers, alongside the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), have made good on their commitment to elevate facilities in the host regions.
Recent updates reveal that significant renovations are underway, notably at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, where the Olympic-standard swimming pool—measuring 50 meters in length and 20 feet deep—is undergoing substantial refurbishment. Other upgrades include the tennis courts situated adjacent to the main stadium.
During the official announcement of Edo State as the games host on December 4, Samuel Ogbuku shared with Governor Monday Okpebholo that the NDDC's intervention policy would ensure that the sporting venues meet global standards. "Your Excellency, I assure you that the facilities designated for the Games will be revamped to comply with international benchmarks," Ogbuku stated.
Itiako Ikpokpo, Chairman of Dunamis-Icon Limited, the organizing body for the games, reaffirmed this promise during a recent facility inspection, emphasizing that an assessment of the venues has been completed, and a transformation of the deteriorated sports facilities is imminent.
"The legacy brought by the games will benefit the host states," Ikpokpo remarked while addressing reporters following the inspection.
Additional renovations have also been made to the twin volleyball and basketball courts at the Wire Road Sports Centre, which now feature changing rooms and essential amenities.
The event is set to attract over 3,000 athletes and 500 coaches competing in 16 different sports from participating states, including Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo, and Rivers. The games are scheduled to take place from February 20 to 27.
