The announcement included comments from the General Secretary of the NFF, Mohammed Sanusi, who conveyed profound sorrow over Zubairu’s death. Sanusi remarked, "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sani Zubairu. This is yet another tragic moment for Nigerian football."

He reflected on the recent losses faced by the football community, citing the deaths of notable figures such as Adegboye Onigbinde and Henry Nwosu, emphasizing that Zubairu was a dedicated and respected individual known for his diligence and commitment to football.

"His efforts to mentor young referees and improve officiating standards across the country were invaluable," Sanusi added, expressing hope for Zubairu's eternal peace and comfort for his family and the broader football community.

Zubairu was recognized for organizing training initiatives that aimed to enhance the skills and knowledge of referees.

In related news, the Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Gbenga Elegbeleye, expressed condolences to Zubairu’s family, the Nigeria Referees Association, and the NFF. He highlighted Zubairu’s significant contributions to the establishment of the league as a lasting legacy for current and aspiring referees.

Elegbeleye also offered prayers for Zubairu's soul and comfort for those grieving his loss. The refereeing chief, originally from Bauchi, was elected as president of the NFRA in April 2023, during the association's delegates conference held in Kwara State.
