Team Nigeria will compete against Uzbekistan in the World Group II Playoffs of the 2026 Davis Cup, which will take place on February 7 and 8 at the renowned Lagos Lawn Tennis Club 1895, as confirmed by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
The Nigerian team, consisting of Adeleye Daniel, Emmanuel Michael, Bulus Christopher, Abua Canice, and Alafia Ayeni, will participate in both singles and doubles matches in a bid to achieve a significant victory on home soil.
Nigeria secured its spot in the playoffs following an impressive run at the African Group III tournament held in Zimbabwe, where they ranked among the top teams, alongside Namibia and Senegal. This commendable performance facilitated their promotion and qualification for the competitive World Group II Playoffs.
The ITF has named Nigeria as the host nation for the upcoming tie, granting the team a vital advantage with expected local support in Lagos.
A win against Uzbekistan would elevate Team Nigeria into World Group II, presenting a pathway to World Group I, thus bringing the country closer to the elite tiers of international tennis and possibly a chance to compete in the Davis Cup World Finals.
In light of these developments, Victor Ochei, President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), conveyed his confidence in the team's readiness and Nigeria's ability to host the event successfully.
"We are optimistic that Nigeria will not only host a successful Davis Cup playoff but will also triumph over Uzbekistan and restore the country’s prominence in tennis on the global stage," Ochei remarked.
He also commended the Lagos State Government, the National Sports Commission, and members of the Local Organising Committee for their efforts in ensuring that all logistics and facilities are appropriately prepared before the event.
The playoff is anticipated to draw widespread interest from tennis enthusiasts and sports fans throughout the nation as Nigeria aims to make a significant impact on the international tennis arena.
