Private Utim Terwase of the Nigerian Army was awarded N500,000 after refusing a cash bribe offered by a suspected kidnapper he had detained. The reward, approved by the commander of Operation Enduring Peace, recognises his adherence to military values.

Private Utim Terwase, a soldier serving in the Nigerian Army, was presented with a cash reward of N500,000 after he turned down a bribe from a suspected notorious kidnapper he had captured. The incident occurred when the detainee attempted to flee custody and offered the soldier money for his release; Terwase declined and handed the suspect over to the appropriate authorities.

What reward was given?

The sum of N500,000 was sanctioned by Major General Maxwell Dangana, the General Officer Commanding of the 3 Division and head of Operation Enduring Peace. The amount matches the alleged bribe the soldier refused, serving as a tangible acknowledgment of his honesty.

How was the reward presented?

Captain Polycarp Oteh, spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace, confirmed that Colonel Pholimon Malgwi, Commander of Sector 6, handed the cash to Private Terwase on behalf of the GOC. During the ceremony, Dangana highlighted the soldier’s commitment to the core military values of honesty, discipline and professionalism.

"The soldier’s conduct reflects the highest standards of military professionalism, loyalty and commitment to duty expected of personnel of the Nigerian Army," Dangana said. "Rather than compromise his responsibility for personal gain, he upheld the values of honesty, accountability and selfless service by discharging his duties responsibly."

Why was the incentive deemed necessary?

Dangana explained that the reward aims to commend Terwase’s integrity and to encourage other troops to emulate his example. He noted that the incentive reinforces ethical standards, accountability and professionalism across the forces operating under Operation Enduring Peace.

What broader message did the commander convey?

The GOC assured that the army will continue to recognise and support personnel who demonstrate dedication to constitutional duties through discipline, integrity and unwavering service, thereby strengthening the overall moral fabric of the security apparatus.
