The Nigerian Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has declared its intention to locate and prosecute the makers of the film ‘The Best Guy’.
The film, which has gained significant traction online, raises serious questions regarding the legality of creating LGBTQ-themed films within the nation.
This crackdown is not unprecedented as the NFVCB has previously targeted filmmakers producing content deemed unsuitable in Nigeria. In 2020, the agency pledged to pursue the creators of the lesbian-themed film ‘Ije’ and those involved in its production.
Responding to this issue, NFVCB Executive Director Shaib Husseini indicated that while he has not yet viewed the film, he has instructed his team to investigate further. Following their findings, he mentioned that a formal report would be sent to YouTube, where the film is currently available for viewing.
In an interview, Husseini elaborated that the Board will gather information about the film's producers and forward it to the relevant law enforcement authorities for appropriate action.
“Distributing same-sex films is against the law in this country, and ‘The Best Guy’ did not receive our certification. We remind filmmakers that all films must be submitted to the Censor Board for registration and classification before distribution, regardless of the platform,” he stated.
He noted that had the film been submitted for approval, it would likely have received an R rating, which restricts its access due to the legal stance against promoting same-sex relationships in the country.
The movie ‘The Best Guy’, produced by Omeleme Studios and directed by Akpos Otubuere, features a cast including Melvin Oduah, Edson Obi, Daniel Uzor, Ayanime Edem, Grace Abah, and Chukwudi Udoye Eternal. The plot centers around Reverend Peter (played by Melvin Oduah), who is about to marry, while his secret partner Leslie (Edson Obi) becomes anxious about their future. Faced with the troubling prospect of sharing Peter, Leslie ends their relationship, leading to a climactic proposal that unfolds unexpected complexities involving both men and Peter's fiancée.
