Nigerian center Stephanie Okechukwu, listed at 7-foot-1 and 21 years old, made her long-awaited debut for the Texas Tech Lady Raiders on Thursday night, instantly becoming the tallest competitor in the history of women's collegiate basketball. The freshman logged 21 minutes in the team's 64-37 season-opening win against Charlotte, contributing six points on a pair of free throws, ten rebounds and three blocked shots.
What did the coach say about her performance? Head coach Krista Gerlich acknowledged the milestone but emphasized that Okechukwu has considerable room for development. "She does not think she played well," Gerlich said. "I'm excited for her and it's only going to get better. There is definitely more."
Destinee Hooks paced the Lady Raiders with 16 points in the contest.
Okechukwu surpasses the previous height benchmark of 6-foot-10, which was shared by Middle Tennessee State freshman Nicole Dominguez and Eastern Illinois sophomore Abbie Boutilier. Her path to Lubbock has been unconventional: after finishing high school in Japan in 2024, she divided her time between an AAU circuit in the Philippines and training sessions in Nigeria before signing with Texas Tech in January. She did not compete during the 2024-25 campaign.
Eligibility was initially restricted to two seasons because the NCAA classified her post-high-school year as a gap year. However, the university successfully appealed for a waiver, restoring her to the standard four years of collegiate eligibility.
