The violent attack on 56-year-old Nila Patel took place during the late afternoon hours of June 24, 2025, on Infirmary Road in Leicester.

Patel, remembered as a "beautiful, vibrant soul" by her family, was on a bus near the site of the crash when the incident transpired. Upon exiting the bus to walk home, she fell victim to Ahanonu's ruthless attack.

Security personnel from the nearby Leicester Royal Infirmary quickly responded to the scene, managing to contain Ahanonu until police arrived.

Meanwhile, medical staff provided immediate assistance to Patel, who was later taken to the hospital with severe injuries, including a fractured skull. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries two days following the incident.

Ahanonu was apprehended at the scene, triggering an inquiry by the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Major Incident Team.

After Patel's death on June 26, 2025, Ahanonu was re-arrested on the charge of murder.

On March 23, 2026, a jury at Leicester Crown Court declared Ahanonu guilty of murdering Ms. Patel. Prior to the murder verdict, Ahanonu admitted to charges of dangerous driving and possession with intent to distribute cannabis, with over £3,000 worth of the drug confiscated from his vehicle.

Earlier in the trial, he had also pleaded guilty to assaulting a female police officer during his arrest. However, he was acquitted of charges related to common assault concerning another woman, an incident that reportedly occurred in London on the same day of the murder.

Currently, Ahanonu remains in custody awaiting sentencing, which is scheduled for today. Investigations have revealed that on the day of the attack, he had traveled from London back to his home in Leicester early in the morning. CCTV footage placed Ahanonu leaving his residence at approximately 5:28 PM, just before the deadly encounter. He was recorded driving recklessly through the city, culminating in a collision with a bus stop on Welford Road minutes later, where commuters were present.
