Olawale Ogunlana, a medical doctor based in Nigeria, has achieved the impressive feat of being named one of TikTok's 50 most influential creators in the year 2026.

A statement issued by James Stafford, TikTok's Global Head of Content Operations, shared this exciting news with PREMIUM TIMES on Friday. Mr. Ogunlana appears on the TikTok Global Discover List for 2026.

The Discover List is an annual recognition that honors creators spanning five categories: Icons, Innovators, Foodies, Educators, and Originators.

Mr. Ogunlana, known for founding HealthKraft Africa, secured a spot in the “Educators” category, while four fellow Africans were acknowledged within the “Foodies” and “Originators” categories.

According to Stafford, Ogunlana and the other 49 honorees have utilized their passions to forge sustainable careers, establish thriving businesses, and connect with audiences globally, thus reshaping the narrative of success in their respective fields.

Stafford elaborated that Ogunlana, who is also recognized as one of TikTok’s Sub-Saharan Wellbeing Ambassadors alongside other educators, has played a pivotal role in encouraging users to discover new educational content, cultivate skills, and expand their knowledge through impactful posts.

Moreover, Ogunlana effectively converts intricate medical topics into engaging and understandable videos, turning digital platforms into essential tools for elevating health literacy across the continent.

He remarked, “Being included in the TikTok Discover List validates the transformative power of digital media in health communication and signifies a personal achievement as well as a pivotal success for public health messaging in Africa.”

Ogunlana emphasized that this accomplishment underscores the increasing desire among users on platforms like TikTok for credible and relatable health information. He said, “Historically, a doctor’s influence has been constrained to clinical settings. Being honored on this list is more than a personal accolade; it validates the efficacy of ‘edutainment’ by illustrating how screens have become modern stethoscopes, facilitating our capacity to educate and heal vast populations simultaneously.”

The 2026 Discover List also features food creators Trevor Were from Nairobi, Kenya, and Wayne Chang from Cape Town, South Africa, alongside creative business founders Cherie Kihato from Nairobi and Tamia Nontsikelelo from Johannesburg.

Both Were and Chang, classified as “Foodies,” are set to participate in a live cooking event that will merge talents from TikTok’s Discover List with those from the Food Network’s celebrated roster, showcasing emerging culinary influences worldwide.

Moreover, Chang has gained recognition for his vibrant culinary presentations, which marry various Asian cuisines with locally available South African ingredients, crafting recipes that celebrate a fusion of cultures. Meanwhile, Were is a self-taught chef who has reinvented everyday meals into appealing dishes, sharing accessible cooking ideas from his personal kitchen.

Kihato, an entrepreneurial spirit, founded Savannah Space, which is a design studio in Kenya that showcases cultural heritage through furniture and art.

In addition, Nontsikelelo has employed storytelling and strategic marketing via TikTok to cultivate a dedicated community around her modest fashion label, Tol’thema. In a remarkably short timeline, she has successfully expanded her brand’s reach and visibility.

In 2025, Sub-Saharan African creators marked their inaugural appearance on the Discover List, achieving noteworthy global recognition. Last year, they were celebrated in various international platforms, including TIME Magazine and the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, where Ghana’s Chef Abby met with influential figures such as TikTok's CEO and the Mayor of London.

This year, TikTok plans to honor its honorees through various events, including a live culinary showcase in New York City titled “Hot List x Discover List: The Future of Flavor,” in collaboration with the Food Network.
