Nigeria's national men's handball squad, known as the Golden Arrows, has kicked off the 2026 sporting year with a commendable performance at the 27th Africa Men's Handball Nations Cup held in Kigali, Rwanda. The team secured a hard-fought 25-23 victory in their opening Group A match against Algeria.

This latest win against Algeria mirrors the success of Nigeria's football team, the Super Eagles, who defeated the same North African opponent 2-0 in a quarterfinal match of the recently concluded 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, marking Nigeria's second victory over Algeria in as many weeks.

The Golden Arrows demonstrated exceptional composure, tactical discipline, and skillful play to establish an early lead in the game, finishing the first half with a 16-13 advantage. They maintained their performance throughout the second half to secure the win.

With this victory, Nigeria is in a favorable position within Group A, which also includes the host nation Rwanda and Zambia. The win strengthens the Golden Arrows' prospects of achieving a podium finish at the continental championship.

Nigeria is scheduled to face Zambia next on Thursday at 1:00 PM in their second group stage game. The tournament serves as a crucial qualifier for the 2027 IHF World Men's Handball Championship set to be held in Germany.

This handball success adds to Nigeria's growing positive momentum in 2026, following Eniola Bolaji's gold medal achievement at the Egypt Para Badminton International and the Super Eagles' commendable bronze medal finish at the AFCON.
