The National Sports Commission (NSC) has applauded the entire Nigerian tennis community after Nigeria successfully advanced to the Davis Cup World Group II, thanks to a hard-fought win over Uzbekistan during the World Group II Promotion Playoffs.
Daniel Adeleye was pivotal in this triumph, leading Nigeria to victory at the historic Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, 1895, and showcasing an impressive home campaign.
Nigeria clinched the tie with a match remaining, as Adeleye secured the critical point on Sunday by defeating Ilya Ignatov with a score of 6–3, 6–4, granting the hosts an unassailable 3–1 lead.
In response to this success, Bukola Olopade, the Director General of the National Sports Commission, expressed his appreciation to the players, officials, and organizers for their hard work.
"We take immense pride in the achievements of these players and the Nigeria Tennis Federation. We commend everyone involved in organizing an excellent tournament culminating in Nigeria's well-deserved promotion," Mr. Olopade stated.
He noted, "This milestone comes at a time when there is renewed vigor for sports in the nation, fueled by the strong dedication of our President. It underscores our conviction that Nigerian sports is on a positive trajectory."
Furthermore, Mr. Olopade emphasized the Commission's continuous support for athletes as they prepare for significant global competitions. "Recently, the Commission allocated grants amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars to 26 athletes, ensuring Nigeria is well-prepared for events like the Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games," he added.
Earlier in the Davis Cup tie, Nigeria gained an early advantage in the crucial doubles match, with Canice Abua and Michael Emmanuel defeating Uzbekistan’s Khumoyun Sultanov and Denis Istomin by 7–6, 6–4. This vital doubles win set the pace for Nigeria’s dominance on the final day.
The two-day contest began evenly, concluding Saturday’s opening singles with a 1–1 tie. However, Nigeria displayed composure and determination on Sunday, winning both singles matches and ultimately securing their promotion.
Advancing to the Davis Cup World Group II marks a significant achievement for Nigerian tennis, highlighting the team’s consistent progress and increasing competitiveness on the global stage.
