The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has announced the discovery and dismantling of an illegal baby factory in the Badagry region. During the operation, 28 individuals were rescued, and two suspects were taken into custody.
State Commandant Adedotun Keshinro shared these details with journalists in Badagry on Friday, noting that the raid was the culmination of a three-week surveillance operation based on credible intelligence.
The facility, identified as being located at Okuju, Ilado, Road 1, Zone 1, Olorunda, was breached by NSCDC operatives during an overnight operation on April 15th and 16th.
According to Keshinro, the arrested suspects allegedly used a Facebook profile to lure pregnant women. They reportedly promised the women sums ranging from ₦500,000 to ₦1 million for their babies after delivery, to be handed over to prospective buyers.
Among the 28 rescued individuals were 17 women who were heavily pregnant, one adult male, and 10 children, including infants. It was reported that one of the victims experienced a miscarriage due to the deplorable and unsanitary conditions within the facility.
Authorities recovered several items from the premises, including a generator set, a water pumping machine, six standing fans, two gas cylinders, a gas burner, large cooking utensils, five mobile phones, four large mats, and various food supplies.
Expressing strong condemnation, the NSCDC Commandant denounced the operation as inhumane and barbaric. He issued a stern warning to anyone involved in such illicit activities, urging them to cease immediately or face severe legal consequences.
Keshinro confirmed that both the apprehended suspects and the rescued victims have been transferred to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and necessary actions.
He assured the public that all individuals implicated in this illegal enterprise would be held accountable and brought before the justice system.
