A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Jos has handed down a two-year jail sentence to a 25-year-old miner, Abubakar Ibrahim, for an incident involving a fraudulent money transfer. The sentence was delivered on Tuesday by Magistrate Mrs. Irene Pati.

Following Ibrahim's guilty plea, the court decided against offering a fine option and instead mandated that the convict pay N120,000 to the aggrieved party as restitution. The magistrate stated that the sentence was intended to serve as a cautionary example.

Earlier in the proceedings, the prosecutor, Insp. Ibrahim Gokwat, informed the court that the victim, Kulwanu Abubakar, had lodged a complaint at the Nassarawa Gwong Police Station on January 16. The complaint detailed how Ibrahim had purchased two truck batteries valued at N120,000 and subsequently claimed to have completed the payment via a transfer.

According to the prosecutor, the complainant discovered that no payment alert had been received, and the phone number provided by Ibrahim became unreachable. An investigation by the police led to the arrest of the convict.

The offense is noted to contravene the provisions of the Plateau Penal Code Law.
