A Magistrates’ Court located in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has ordered that a 37-year-old nurse named Kehinde Adesanya be held at the Ibara Correctional Centre. This decision comes after she was charged with conspiracy, attempted abortion, and murder.
Adesanya is facing four counts of charges linked to conspiracy, attempt to induce abortion, and murder.
The police prosecutor, Solomon Babalola, presented an ex parte motion to the court requesting that the defendant be remanded.
He sought an initial remand period of 60 days at the Ibara Correctional Centre while awaiting legal guidance from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Babalola informed the court that the alleged offenses occurred between January and March in the Ikereku region of Laderin, Abeokuta.
It is alleged that the defendant collaborated with others, who are currently unknown, to facilitate an abortion for Victoria Ariyo, a 23-year-old corps member serving in Abeokuta.
Ariyo died last week and was subsequently buried after reportedly suffering complications from the abortion procedure.
On Monday, an individual named Abass Olalekan, identified as the father of Ariyo's unborn child, appeared in court and was granted bail on related charges.
According to the prosecutor, Adesanya is accused of providing the deceased with medication intended to terminate her pregnancy, which allegedly led to Ariyo's death.
Babalola asserted that these actions violate Sections 516, 230, 324, and 319 of the Ogun State Criminal Code Laws of 2006.
Magistrate Mrs. O.O. Sam-Obaleye approved Babalola's request and ordered Adesanya to be kept in custody at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending further legal advice from the State DPP.
The hearing has been adjourned until May 26 for a follow-up mention.
