Monica Nku, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) stationed in Edo State, made a generous donation of 1,000 doses of Tanzol deworming tablets to the state’s Ministry of Health on Thursday.
This initiative is intended to support the efforts to diminish the prevalence of worm infections among children in schools across the region.
Nku's donation was part of her Community Development Service (CDS), which follows a health awareness campaign she spearheaded at Anglican Girls Grammar School, Benin City, where she informed students about the importance of deworming and personal hygiene.
During the presentation of the tablets, Nku expressed that her initiative was prompted by the findings she made during her outreach.
“I successfully educated around 1,000 students, and I noted that numerous school-aged children suffer from worm infections without realising it.
“This infection negatively impacts their health, growth, and ability to learn. Many children exhibit weakness, experience stomach pains, lose their appetite, and underperform academically due to worms,” the corps member explained.
She detailed that the deworming tablets are meant for complimentary distribution to children at public health institutions.
“Today, I am presenting 1,000 doses of deworming tablets designated for primary health centres, public hospitals, and pharmacies, which should be administered free of charge to children through my efforts,” Ms. Nku stated.
Nku also connected the high rates of worm infections to inadequate hygiene practices.
“I observed that insufficient personal hygiene, like walking barefoot, failing to wear shoes, and neglecting proper handwashing, fosters the spread of infections among children,” she remarked.
The initiative is designed to enhance the health of students, reduce illness, and promote healthy, productive lives.
Upon receiving the donation, Cyril Oshiomhole, the state Commissioner for Health, commended Ms. Nku for her selfless act, assuring her that the tablets would be utilized effectively.
“This is a laudable effort, and we guarantee that the donation will reach those it's intended for,” he reaffirmed.
Theresa Ayanru, the NYSC Local Government Inspector for Oredo, also recognised Nku for her dedication to going beyond the standard expectations of her service.
“She arrived at the orientation camp with a clear vision for what she wanted to accomplish. She was determined not to follow the usual path taken by others.
“From the outset of her service, she initiated her own personal project,” she noted.
According to reports by the News Agency of Nigeria, Nku's health-oriented CDS builds on her previous contributions during the 2025 NYSC orientation camp, where she provided 300 sanitary pads to female corps members to advocate for menstrual hygiene and dignity.
