Oba Maduabuchi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has asserted that a dynamic and effective opposition is vital for the protection of Nigeria's democracy and the promotion of accountability.
During a discussion about the current political climate in the country, Maduabuchi pointed out the critical role that a functioning opposition plays in maintaining democratic equilibrium. He warned that without such opposition, the ruling party could operate without restraint, which might jeopardize accountability and good governance.
He stated, "It is not in the best interest of Nigerians that we do not have a good and vibrant opposition," underlining his concern that the existing turmoil within opposition parties is a significant threat to the democratic process in Nigeria.
Maduabuchi specifically mentioned the issues afflicting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which he characterizes as a key player among opposition forces with substantial backing from the populace. He noted that the internal strife and unresolved leadership challenges have left the party in a state of disorder, particularly at a crucial juncture when election preparations should be taking place.
The Senior Advocate called upon Nigeria's Supreme Court to accelerate its handling of pending cases involving the PDP, warning that any delays could negatively impact the electoral process. With party primaries anticipated to start shortly, he stressed that uncertainty surrounding leadership roles could hinder the opposition's readiness.
He further urged the Supreme Court to prioritize resolving disputes concerning the legitimacy of conflicting leadership factions within the PDP, as well as the identity of the recognized leadership emerging from the Damagun National Working Committee (NWC). Maduabuchi believes that a definitive judicial ruling would restore order and enable the party to progress effectively.
He commented, "Whatever anybody says, the PDP is ingrained in the DNA of many Nigerians. I firmly believe that the real opposition party in Nigeria is the PDP. I hold the view, albeit cautiously, that without an active opposition, the ruling party will dominate effortlessly. The APC is currently enjoying a leisurely stroll, casually deciding who gets appointed to what positions. Therefore, I urge the Supreme Court to act in a manner that benefits Nigerian politics. They must resolve this issue."
Maduabuchi elaborated, "This is the moment for the Court of Appeal to step in and state, 'ignore your briefs, focus on these two critical questions.' Between Turaki and Abdulrahman, who legitimately emerged from the recognized NWC of Damagun? If we can establish that, the issue will be settled. The Supreme Court needs to clarify which faction emerged from the accepted National Working Committee, as resolving this matter would render all other discussions moot. I urge the Supreme Court to do this for the sake of Nigeria's progress. That's the only way the country can advance."
