What is the latest security and economic update from Ogun State? Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has officially stated that his administration is fully prepared to implement a state police command to safeguard investments and maintain public safety. Alongside this security update, the state government has commenced a social investment cash transfer scheme to alleviate the burdens of escalating food and transportation prices for vulnerable citizens.
The governor made these disclosures during a strategic town hall meeting focused on the 2027 budget and the 2027–2029 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) for the Remo Division, held at the palace of the Akarigbo of Remoland in Sagamu.
Why is Ogun State pushing for a state police force? Speaking in his capacity as the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum Committee on State Police, Abiodun noted that the continuous expansion of industrial and commercial activities across Ogun demands a more localized and robust security architecture. He emphasized that the state has consistently supported existing security frameworks by supplying operational vehicles, financial allowances, and logistical equipment.
According to the governor, regional security outfits including the Ogun State Security Network, commonly known as Amotekun, and the So-Safe Corps currently boast a combined workforce of approximately 6,000 personnel. These agencies have received continuous backing to protect economic gains and maintain law and order throughout the state's 20 local government areas.
How does the new cash transfer scheme work? To address immediate economic hardships, the administration initiated a direct financial support program for low-income households. Abiodun attributed some of the prevailing economic pressures and spikes in transportation expenses to international supply chain disruptions stemming from conflicts in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
The welfare disbursement began immediately in Sagamu, with pre-identified beneficiaries receiving credit alerts directly. The governor confirmed that the intervention will progressively roll out to neighboring communities like Ogijo and extend across the entire Remoland region and the wider state.
What other infrastructural projects were announced? In addition to financial palliatives, Abiodun announced plans to drill water boreholes across all 236 political wards in the state. The administration will also distribute electrical transformers and solar-powered streetlights to boost community safety and improve access to essential utilities.
State Commissioner for Finance and Economic Adviser Dapo Okubadejo provided fiscal insights during the forum, revealing that Ogun achieved a 70 percent expenditure performance in its N490 billion budget for 2024, followed by a 65 percent implementation rate for the N1.05 trillion budget in 2025.
Local stakeholders, including Sagamu Local Government Chairman Afolabi Odulate and the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, commended ongoing infrastructure efforts while urging the government to establish facility monitoring teams, address border encroachment issues with Lagos State, and lobby for federal tertiary institutions in the division.
