The Okpekpe International 10km Road Race, renowned as Nigeria’s leading road- running event, is poised to return on the 23rd of May, with organizers pledging to deliver a grand and innovative experience for its 11th iteration.
Mike Itemuagbor, the Chief Executive Officer of Pamodzi Sports International, affirmed the race's return, emphasizing its strengthened format after the cancellation of the 2025 edition due to unexpected challenges.
"The Okpekpe race is coming back stronger in 2026. Circumstances beyond our control prevented us from hosting it last year. We have heard from numerous athletes and officials eager to participate, and we assured them that the race would make its return this year for the 11th edition," Mr. Itemuagbor stated.
Having solidified its status as a vital event in Nigerian athletics, the Okpekpe race was the first in the country to have its course accurately measured by a World Athletics-certified measurer. Its label status was also historic, making it the first road race in West Africa to receive this recognition in 2015.
The event has transitioned from a bronze to gold label status, consistently attracting elite runners from countries including Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Morocco, Bahrain, and Nigeria.
Beyond its competitive spirit, the race has significantly influenced the hosting community. It has placed Okpekpe, a rural town situated in Edo State, on the global sports scene while simultaneously stimulating local economic growth and tourism.
"We thank the thousands who reached out to us via phone calls, emails, and social media. We want to assure them that not only are we returning this May, but this event is here to stay," Itemuagbor emphasized.
Over the years, the competition has produced outstanding performances with Daniel Ebenyo setting the men’s course record at 28:28 in 2023, while Caroline Kipkirui holds the women’s record at 32:38.
For the 2026 edition, organizers plan to introduce new initiatives designed to enhance the experience for athletes, spectators, and the local community, all while preserving its reputation as a world-class event.
With excitement building as the May 23 event approaches, the organizers are optimistic that this edition will further enrich the legacy of the race, showcasing exceptional performances and introducing new champions.
