Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has countered allegations of a Christian genocide in the nation, attributing the ongoing violence to terrorism, crime, and longstanding instability. During her interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network in Washington, she expressed her perspective on the rising concerns regarding religious conflicts in Nigeria, especially as the country approaches the 2027 elections.
Addressing accusations of the systematic targeting of Christians, she stated, "I don't think so," insisting that the situation is far more intricate than a singular narrative suggests.
She elaborated, stating, "When you have terrorists and individuals kidnapping for financial gain, and when a narrative of Christian genocide is propagated, terrorists may seize upon that to attack churches."
Tinubu, who is an ordained Pentecostal pastor, revealed that she has faced backlash and threats due to both her faith and her marriage to President Bola Tinubu, a practicing Muslim.
"There was a Muslim cleric that labeled me as a heathen," she remarked, noting, "Most of those who came to my defense are from the North."
She emphasized that religious divisions in Nigeria are often more complex than they are typically portrayed, citing her nearly four-decade interfaith marriage as an example of potential coexistence.
Furthermore, she remarked, "If I'm going to enjoy my marriage, Jesus has to come in and give me that peace,” describing her husband as a good man.
While dismissing the label of genocide, she acknowledged the profound insecurity presently afflicting the country and welcomed international assistance in combating terrorism.
"We express our gratitude to President Trump for the aid he provided," she acknowledged, referencing U.S. military support against terrorist factions. "This was the first Christmas when no one was assaulted."
Nigeria continues to grapple with years of violence associated with insurgency, banditry, and communal strife, leading to numerous fatalities and the displacement of millions of people. This turmoil has sparked an ongoing international dialogue regarding the complexities and extent of religious persecution within the country.
