A tragic incident unfolded on Friday at the bustling Ilorin Central Market, widely known as Oja Oba, when at least one person was reported dead following a confrontation among suspected cultists.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that rival factions engaged in a fierce gunfight during the day, prompting traders, motorists, and passersby to seek immediate refuge from the chaos.
It was reported that one of the individuals involved in the fracas was shot and killed amid the confrontation.
Upon investigation, a correspondent discovered the lifeless body of the suspect, who was found lying in a pool of blood alongside a firearm, at the scene.
The incident occurred just minutes before noon, causing a surge of panic among the numerous petty traders who were actively selling their goods amidst the usual heavy foot and vehicle traffic in the area.
The sound of gunfire near the designated area where both military and police personnel were present to uphold market regulations heightened the atmosphere of fear.
As the violent exchange intensified, the once vibrant marketplace descended into turmoil, with individuals fleeing in various directions to avoid becoming collateral damage in the altercation.
Motorists and pedestrians heading towards Emir Road, Ita Ajia, and the Gambari area hastily diverted their routes in an effort to steer clear of the conflict.
Numerous vendors were observed hastily gathering their merchandise and running for safety, while others took cover inside nearby shops or enclosed stalls.
Law enforcement officers stationed within the market acted swiftly, pursuing some of the fleeing suspects in an attempt to manage the situation.
During the police’s response, they managed to apprehend one suspect, described as wearing white traditional attire and carrying a small bag.
This suspect was subsequently taken to the C Division Police Station at Oja Oba.
At the time of this report late Friday afternoon, the identity of the deceased remained unknown.
Law enforcement officials later removed the body from the location in a police patrol vehicle.
Adetoun Ejire Adeyemi, the Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the occurrence and stated that an inquiry into the conflict has already started, assuring that those responsible will face justice.
