A female passenger has lost her life, and six others were injured following a road accident involving a commercial bus that occurred on Sunday morning in Lagos.
The incident transpired at New Castle Bus Stop, which is situated along the Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway, heading towards Gbagada.
Eyewitnesses reported that the commercial bus apparently lost control and collided with a roadside culvert.
The powerful impact of the crash caused a female passenger to be ejected from the vehicle onto the expressway, where she was tragically struck by an approaching articulated truck, resulting in her immediate death.
In addition to the deceased, six other passengers, including the bus driver, sustained various degrees of injuries.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), confirmed the event and stated that preliminary findings indicated the crash involved a Volkswagen commercial bus bearing the registration number LSD 654 XY.
He explained that the bus veered off the road and collided with a roadside culvert.
Bakare-Oki further clarified that the force from the collision hurled the female passenger out of the bus, leading to her being run over by the articulated trailer, whose driver was unable to take evasive action in time.
LASTMA officials were quick to respond by setting in motion emergency traffic management strategies to avoid additional accidents.
“To protect other motorists and avert a secondary collision, LASTMA personnel temporarily cordoned off the entire expressway to facilitate the removal of the deceased and the injured passengers, as well as the wreckage of the Volkswagen bus involved in the fatal incident,” he said.
He noted that the driver of the truck fled the accident scene post-incident.
“Security personnel from the Pedro Police Division arrived promptly to provide essential security support to the traffic management teams and emergency responders, ensuring order was maintained around the accident site.
“Additionally, personnel from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) efficiently evacuated the six seriously injured individuals, including the driver, who reportedly suffered a broken leg, transporting them to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.
“The remains of the deceased female passenger were respectfully evacuated from the scene by officials from the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU).
“After successfully conducting these evacuations, LASTMA staff diligently cleared all barriers along the expressway and restored normal traffic flow on the main carriageway,” he stated.
Bakare-Oki expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased, extending prayers for their strength to cope with their loss.
