OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed on Friday evening that his company has entered into an agreement with the Pentagon. This deal will see OpenAI's artificial intelligence tools deployed within classified military operational systems.
According to reports, the agreement includes crucial safety stipulations, mirroring some of the requirements that rival company Anthropic had sought, such as prohibiting domestic mass surveillance and ensuring human oversight for the deployment of force.
Altman elaborated on platform X, stating, "Two of our most important safety principles are prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for the use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems. The DoW agrees with these principles, reflects them in law and policy, and we put them into our agreement."
He further indicated that OpenAI would be dispatching engineers to the Pentagon to ensure the secure and effective operation of its AI models. "We are asking the DoW to offer these same terms to all AI companies, which in our opinion we think everyone should be willing to accept. We have expressed our strong desire to see things de-escalate away from legal and governmental actions and towards reasonable agreements," Altman added.
The new contract for OpenAI comes just hours after former President Donald Trump instructed all federal agencies to cease using AI tools developed by Anthropic. At the time, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had characterized Anthropic as a "supply chain risk" due to its reluctance to accept Pentagon- mandated restrictions.
Anthropic has stated its intention to contest this designation, which is typically applied to companies suspected of ties to foreign adversaries.
Details clarifying the precise differences between OpenAI's agreement and the terms Anthropic was presented with remain undisclosed. CNN has reportedly sought further information from both the Pentagon and OpenAI.
Secretary Hegseth shared Altman's announcement on X. Under Secretary Emil Michael highlighted the critical importance of dependable partnerships in the realm of military AI. "When it comes to matters of life and death for our warfighters, having a reliable and steady partner that engages in good faith makes all the difference as we enter into the AI Age," he commented.
