On Saturday, over 10,000 pupils from primary and secondary institutions throughout Nigeria engaged in the 23rd Annual National Mathematics Competition (ANMC), which was organized by the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) in conjunction with the National Mathematical Centre (NMC).

Participants included students from Primary 5 and 6, as well as those in Junior Secondary School (JSS) 1 to 3. The competition was held concurrently at different centers across 31 states, plus the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

During the event, Dr. Fevzullah Bilgin, the Managing Director of NTIC, referred to the ANMC as one of the most significant and esteemed mathematics competitions in Nigeria.

He noted that the competition, which started in 2003, aims to foster effective mathematics education at the basic level and enhance students’ capabilities in the subject. Although the competition was originally exclusive to Primary 5 and 6 students, a junior secondary category was added in 2022 to enable participation from JSS 1–3 students.

Dr. Bilgin emphasized that the ANMC has evolved into a national platform dedicated to honing mathematical talent, asserting that robust mathematical skills are crucial for success in STEM fields and other science-oriented areas.

In addition to its competitive aspect, the ANMC also acts as a scholarship opportunity. Exceptional students who advance past the second round will be awarded full-tuition scholarships to attend NTIC and may also receive cash prizes. Furthermore, mathematics teachers of these successful students will be granted monetary rewards, while participating schools will receive educational resources, including computers and tablets.

The ANMC Coordinator, Mr. Erdal, revealed that since the competition's inception, over 500,000 pupils have taken part nationally, with more than 600 outstanding students obtaining full scholarships that cover tuition and boarding costs for their entire secondary education.
