On Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) extended its condolences to the families of Armed Forces personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country. The party called on the Federal Government to prioritize enhancements in welfare and adequate financing for the nation’s security forces.

In a statement issued on Thursday to commemorate the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the PDP hailed the fallen heroes for their critical role in safeguarding Nigeria’s integrity and sovereignty.

The party's National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, remarked that this occasion serves as a significant moment for reflection on the enormous sacrifices made by military personnel, as well as those in the security and intelligence sectors who continue to tackle threats to national peace.

The PDP emphasized that improved welfare packages are essential for boosting morale and empowering security personnel in the execution of their duties. Furthermore, it called on the Federal Government to ensure that security agencies receive adequate funding to enhance their ability to combat criminal activities and restore tranquility throughout the nation.

"On a day dedicated to remembrance like this, we salute those who paid the ultimate price for the enduring existence of our nation," the statement conveys, underscoring that the sacrifices of those who have fallen should never be taken lightly.

The PDP also urged all stakeholders, both governmental and non-governmental, to refrain from actions that could destabilize the country, reinforcing that peace and unity are of utmost importance.

In a prayerful gesture, the party expressed its hope that the lives lost will not be in vain and that their sacrifices will continue to be commemorated.

Additionally, General Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), expressed the Armed Forces of Nigeria's unwavering commitment to combating terrorism and other forms of criminality that threaten the nation’s peace and democratic values.

During his address at the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day regimental dinner held on Wednesday, Oluyede specified that the military cannot stand alone in preserving the nation’s heritage.

He stated, "The path forward requires a comprehensive approach involving society at large, as articulated in my strategic vision for the Armed Forces of Nigeria. It is essential that we strengthen connections with local communities and work collaboratively with other security agencies."

Oluyede highlighted that despite challenges that might appear overwhelming, troops have managed to succeed and earn the trust of Nigeria's populace, thereby bridging any gaps between the military and civilian areas, and fostering confidence and pride.

"As we begin this regimental dinner, let the solemnity of this moment guide our thoughts, and may the spirit of camaraderie fortify the bonds that unite us as one family within the Armed Forces," he concluded.

"May this evening rekindle our commitment, deepen our respect for our traditions, and motivate us to continue serving our nation with integrity, professionalism, and dedicated selflessness."
