Okezie Ikpeazu, who heads the National Convention Planning and Organising Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has affirmed that although the party has experienced electoral losses, it retains its reputation as Nigeria’s most structured political party.
Ikpeazu made this statement during his opening remarks at the PDP’s 10th Elective National Convention held on Sunday in Abuja, with the support of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.
The convention, themed "Inclusiveness, Unity and Renewal," aims to elect new members to the party's National Working Committee (NWC) for the next four years. Ikpeazu, who is a former governor of Abia State, urged delegates to remain focused on the party’s institutional strengths despite recent setbacks in elections.
He recalled that the last time the PDP convened for this purpose was in October 2021 at Eagle Square in Abuja, noting that the party has since faced numerous challenges. Ikpeazu emphasized the necessity for the party to undergo renewal and rebranding, maintaining that its national influence remains unparalleled in Nigeria’s political landscape.
He stated, "The PDP remains Nigeria's most experienced, structured, and nationally connected party, which is largely due to your loyalty and support. While we may have faced electoral defeats, this critical characteristic continues to belong to us, and we must protect it vigorously."
Ikpeazu called for immediate action from new NWC members to restore unity within the party, highlighting that their role is critical and urgent. He remarked, "The duty of genuine reconciliation is fundamental and must no longer be viewed as optional. Your work must begin now to heal divisions, restore trust, and enhance internal democracy across the party."
He concluded by encouraging delegates from all 36 states and the FCT to embody the spirit of the convention in their respective constituencies, advocating for inclusivity and unity in future engagements. "Together, we shall rise again," he declared.
