The newly elected chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State, Alabh George Turnah, has declared that the party is poised to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
Upon his election and subsequent swearing-in backed by the Nyesom Wike faction of the party, Turnah called on party members to unite, emphasizing that "the party is still alive in the state."
The election, conducted by officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), took place over the weekend, leading to Turnah's appointment as the chairman.
The new 20-member state working committee also features Ato Alfreder Ebibofayei as Secretary and Biobelemoyei Goniwari as Treasurer, among other positions.
Hon. Austin Sor, who led the electoral panel for Bayelsa State, praised the members for their peaceful conduct during the election, affirming that PDP will remain a strong and influential party in the region.
Turnah expressed confidence that the PDP would reclaim governance in Bayelsa and return to Creek Haven, the state's administrative hub, insisting on the importance of a collective effort from party members.
He stated, “We thank our delegates, the panel and INEC observers. I would like to accept this mandate on behalf of my team and the newly elected State Working Committee members. We are honored to take this sacred mandate from our people and will not betray the trust placed in us.
“We commit to working diligently in accordance with the oath of office we have just taken.
“I assure you, this marks a new beginning for the PDP in Bayelsa State; PDP is Bayelsa and Bayelsa is PDP. Do not be misled by portrayals of the PDP as merely an opposition party; in practical terms, PDP is the majority party in Bayelsa State. At the appropriate time, our people, including the Ijaw community, will reciprocate the recognition of the party that has contributed significantly to their aspirations in Nigeria.
“We are not ungrateful, and we intend to continue supporting this party even through challenges. The divine assistance that favored PDP in Bayelsa in 2019 remains steadfast today. Come 2027, under our guidance, PDP will not only make a strong statement, but we will also meet the expectations of the public; Creek Haven belongs to PDP.
“I assure you of an open-door administration. It will be a collective effort, with PDP standing for you, and we hope you will equally support the PDP.”
